Russia to Speed Up Bushehr N. Plant Running

TEHRAN (FNA) - Deputy Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Saeedi said that the Russian contractor in charge of the construction of Iran's first nuclear power plant has accepted to speed up the plant's launching process.

After a meeting with Head of Russian Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corp Sergei Kiriyenko in Moscow on Tuesday, Saeedi said that the pre-commission stages of Bushehr nuclear power plant and initial steps for loading dummy fuel are successfully underway to make the reactor prepared for real fuel loading.

Russia has been helping Iran with the construction of the nuclear facility in the southern port city of Bushehr under a contract signed in 1995.

Bushehr power plant started its pre-commissioning stage in the presence of Iranian and Russian nuclear experts in February and Kiriyenko, after touring Iran's first nuclear power plant then, said that it is time to put the plant into operation.

Saeedi further said that during the meeting Tehran and Moscow vowed to expand nuclear cooperation.

He underlined that the details of the nuclear cooperation are to be finalized during a session between the Head of AEOI Gholam Reza Aqazadeh and Kiriyenko after fuel loading of Bushehr nuclear plant and studies of experts are concluded.

Meantime, Saeedi rejected existing of any financial or technical obstacles to the launch of operation of Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Earlier in June, Russia announced that the completion of Bushehr Power plant is being delayed due to Russian banks' refusal to work with Iran.

Atomstroiexport Chief Dan Belenky, however, did not name the banks and did not give a new schedule for the completion of the project.

"This is a very difficult process, so I think to speak of a concrete date for the launch is still early," Belenky told the Interfax news agency.
